Spriting tutorial: How to do a revamp
First i have to say that i use the software "Gimp" to do sprites and some things may change with other programs.
For example, we want revamp Blastoise, if we have extracted the sprites in a folder we can begin:
note: pokemons with surf like blastoise have 17 sprites (12 normal, 1 corpse, 4 from surf)
First we create a new image and add all the sprites to it, by copy paste or dragging it.
Combine all layers and do a duplicate, invert the color in one of the duplicates (we do that to know what we have draw at the moment of outlning):
Taking the color of sprites background (pink), we paint a new layer, then with the magic wand we select the empty space in main layer of sprites and delete selection, should be like that:
After that duplicate the layer of pink background and hide one.
Then in a new layer, with the pencil in 1 px draw the outline of the sprite ( in inverted you will see white line)
- now we will do some changes to improve the sprite, for examle i edited the direction and the size of cannons.
- the sprites with a cross arent necessary to do because we can get them by roting it
In a new layer paint the differents parts of body (one layer for each colour, skin, shell, cannons...)
Add all colors and retail some edges...
Now we can add details like eyes, horns, paws...
* Duplicate layer of outline and close sprites with pencil if they are open so we can select only the outer space with the wand (U = open, O = close)
Then with the brush and black colour we can do some shadows in a new layer:
Delete the outer space to "clean" the image by selecting the empty space in "*":
With the same technique add more shadows to get some detail:
- we can do the lights/ shines with the same technique but with white colour (remember to create new layer):
IMPORTANT:
Before saving the images we have to clean them, to do this combine all visible layers ( all needed for the sprite but one of pink background) , and with the colour selector with level 0 select the pink background and delete selection, if the image is not clean you will see some pink dots, delete them and combine the layer with the clean pink background.
After a lot of edits, shadows, lights, etc, you have finished the sprite and you can save each sprite in its image of folder:
Tips:
- Remember to create a new layers for differents things so in the future you can edit them easily
- use the select tool to do retails, edits, etc, is very useful
- ...
That's all, if you have a dubt send a pm or ask here if you think that will be useful for other members!
