Pretty much any pokemon that you can get while creating character is a very good choice alongside eevee (and his evolutions), pikachu(raichu), bellossom, sunflora, poochyena(mightyena), pinsir, pachirisu, mime jr., graveler(golem) and other options like lumineon, bisharp, natu(Xatu) etc. Pretty much anything in this game is viable after few rebalance updates so they can choose whatever they want.

After obtaining lvl 50 you can do things like collecting badges from kanto to get yellow box, do cassino achievment (5times jackpot on same machine), kanto box 2 and 3 or activate 1 day premium ticket to make missions that you can find there http://en.padventures.info/Missions mostly first arena, pokemon paradox, firesilver and few others or wait a few more lvls and do stuff like tm case 3.

Its also good to check this guide for newcomers http://en.padventures.info/Newcomers_Guide so you can get some idea about best cities and what you can hunt there, you can also lvl up in places like cinnabar (tower with fire pokemons), yellow hall quest, Pewter quest, Rock pokemon respawn between saffron and lavender, electric pokemon spawn next to lavender etc.
